Dazzle Invites | Sarah Lindsay

This collection is influenced by Bakelite jewellery for it’s subtle colours and the way it mimics natural materials. Mid-century textile print has also been a source of inspiration for the colours and graphic motifs. Sarah wanted to contrast the natural look of her Dust slices by using pattern in these designs, such as by cutting out areas of the slices and imprinting the surfaces with linear textures. The regularity of the form of chain provides a contrast to the raw Dust edges. This is a special collection for Dazzle Invites as the pieces are one-offs made from Dust elements from previous years of experiments. Since relocating from London to Harrogate she is no longer heat-pressing new Dust slices and is developing new work.

Sarah developed the Dust collection after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2002 where she explored the use of different plastics for jewellery. Her innovative process involved making acrylic particles which were then heat pressed in layers over time. This way of making allowed her to mix her own colours and also to make speckled, multi-coloured surfaces. The resultant slices were solid in the middle and porous on the edges which she then crumbled away into lightweight yet strong slices.
